Now I'm sitting here in the sauna construction somewhat in a state of agitation.
I'm installing timber paneling in the sauna section of a log cabin. My question now is, how do you mount it without it cracking apart? I have self-drilling panel screws, but the darn thing cracks with EVERY screw?

This will probably stay over the summer, and next winter I'll tear everything apart and put up drywall instead. It's like paper.

Have you tried pre-drilling?

See it as an opportunity to buy new fun tools. I bought a Makita 18V nail gun when I was going to put up some wainscoting. Quick and fun.

Buy the right screw for the purpose.
Wood screws are usually not self-drilling, more that the tip is serrated to cut its way into the wood.

Have used wsb floor screw. Very satisfied with it, drills nicely and never splits.

Panel clips might be an option, then you won't have to see screws/nails after installation.

Are you using self-drilling panel screws?

Then there's that classic Swedish low-quality wood, with a smaller eternity between the annual rings, mostly only suitable for toilet paper. Unfortunately, it's not easy to find anything else.

Make sure to buy paneling with the heartwood side facing outwards,
not inwards like in the picture, so it bends the right way, and pre-drill and nail.

I installed the same type of panel in a sauna, but nailed it with brads instead.
