ok seems like most people share my opinion that the post was load-bearing. Is this considered a hidden defect? For the sake of argument, let's assume that the windows are not dimensioned to take the load from the upper floor/roof.

It may very well be that the windows can carry the resulting load, but I don't want to have a discussion about this during an upcoming sale. I could have the bad luck to encounter a competent inspector who actually discovers and notes down this construction. There was no remark on this during the latest inspection.

Should a building notification always be made if you make changes that affect the load-bearing structure?

Yes, a building notification must always be made if an intervention in the load-bearing structure is to be done. There is some cheating/carelessness about this, especially during window replacements. Perhaps because it is not apparent that an intervention in the load-bearing structure is being done until you are in the middle of the demolition of the old frame.
