We are undergoing an extension, and right now the roof beams are in progress. Due to the shortage of glulam, our contractor had a designer calculate and design a beam made of construction timber with reinforcements of gerber plates, hole plates, and glued reinforcements.
The construction drawings appear (as far as I can tell) solid and correct, but the builders misinterpreted the drawing and built the beams with joints placed too close to each other. When this was discovered, they reversed the work and tore down the beams that were built.
Now to the question: The timber used for the beams now contains quite a few screw holes and holes from anchor nails.
Is there any reason to worry about reusing these beams in our load-bearing roof structure? What does the collective experience and knowledge from the forum say? Is there any reason not to reuse this timber?
Our builders chose, entirely on their own initiative, to replace all the timber that had previously been "perforated" with anchor nails (before I had a chance to point it out...). So I'm completely satisfied with their decision and with the results of their beam construction
