Large plastered gate pillars in old style.
We are working on a fence project and are considering how to construct a couple of larger, plastered gate posts. Perhaps something like these at Lambohov manor, but slightly smaller. On the outside of each post, there’s a meter-high stone wall that could be utilized, perhaps by attaching to it for extra stability?

What do you think we should do? Concrete blocks? Cast in a mold, how? Grateful for all thoughts.

Mjo, but I was mainly thinking about the construction. You can always polish the surface afterwards?

Casting is definitely the safest! Then you can get a secure anchoring in the foundation.
Possibly you could use prefabricated chimney modules like Isokern, of course it depends on what sectional dimension you need.

I know a bit about houses, but casting is something I'm lousy at. It’s possible, of course, but it must be a heck of a job to make a mold, I assume, a mold that holds. However, maybe I could line it inside the mold and get those grooves directly so I wouldn’t have to plaster, that should save a lot of time. Is it possible? How thick would the wall need to be?
Chimney modules sounded nice, but I assume you would end up paying for a lot of heat insulation etc. unnecessarily.
Do you think hollow concrete blocks hold? Ideally, you should be able to hang a couple of gates on them, of course. Glue lightweight concrete panels?

It is undeniably a good idea with chimney modules. I will have to look it up.
Those of you who can cast, do you think it's possible to get the grooves in the post if you attach a triangular strip on the inside of the mold? Is it difficult, or is it just filling with loosely mixed cement? What do you think about the thickness of the walls, is 10 cm enough? I assume there will be a hell of a lot of pressure in the mold, can you cast in stages?

Anyone have any idea if it's possible to cast in a mold with internal strips? Does the mix fill around the strip or could there be problems?
@ SBH, Nhqp. Ok, so I can consider masonry anyway...

Sure, it's fine to cast with moldings in the form (preferably painted or lacquered so it's easier to remove the form, and they don't swell as much). To get it really good, you should vibrate the concrete so that it fills the form properly. 10 cm thick walls with a core of cellplast or maybe lecablock should be really stable. Just read up on form construction, because you need really stable forms if you're going to cast high posts.
Thank you for the answer! How do I vibrate something that is 10 cm wide? Do you have any tips on where I should start reading about form building?
You just insert a regular wand vibrator into the mold. They can be rented everywhere or you can buy here for example:

Regarding form building, I have no direct links, but there is good info on the forum if you search a bit. Here are some pictures of different molds for inspiration:

If you build a similar form as the one on page 11 but with studs and form plywood instead, it should work.
