I want to replace the tiles in our kitchen.

For those of you who have ever removed tiles. Is it possible to do it without damaging the shelf that is surrounded by tiles, or do I need to buy a new shelf as well?

Nothing is impossible as long as you take it carefully.

Try to remove the shelf first if possible, if it doesn't work you might be able to wrap it with some protective layer so it doesn't get damaged.:)

Isn't it less work to cut pieces with a multi-tool straight through the drywall and remove larger pieces?

Thanks for the quick response! It sounds like I don't need to buy a new shelf without having tried at least.

Did you reply in the wrong thread? I don't think there's any plaster here.

You replied in the wrong thread, right? No plaster here I think.
probably means that there is plaster behind the tiles.

I hope you don't have a panel behind the shelf.

Just put on safety glasses and gloves. Hammer/sledgehammer and chisel. You can use a small demolition hammer for the larger areas.

Aha, I understand. No, it's an outer wall of masonry brick behind. I'm not so concerned about what's behind, but mostly the shelf and maybe the cabinets.

Is the shelf installed before or after the tiles?

Otherwise, you can put new tiles on top of the old ones, which doesn’t always work if it builds up too much on a stainless steel sink, etc.

Yes, the shelf was installed before the tiles. Hmm, it feels like it might add too much to put the tiles on top. The shelf is not very deep.
