Hi!
We are going to build a railing for our stairs.
We bought pine from a good sawmill nearby, and we then cut it to our specifications. We have since laid the posts flat in the garage on trestles. After a few days, a little bluish discoloration started to appear on some posts. Later, most were more or less affected. I hope you can see from my pictures what I mean. The wood still feels somewhat damp to the touch.

Do we need to buy new wood? Can this be salvaged in any way? How should we dry it? Is it mold?
We planned to put up the railing soon as we have a little boy at home who will soon start walking and climbing.
Thanks for the help!

  • Several wooden planks in a garage, with one plank showing signs of blue discoloration, possibly indicating mold or moisture-related issues.
  • Pine timber planks with blue stains possibly moldy, laid flat on sawhorses in a garage, showing signs of moisture-related discoloration.
  • Close-up of wooden planks with visible blue stains, potentially indicating moisture or mold issues in the garage.

Yes, it is mold, which develops very quickly if you have untreated wood outdoors or in colder and more humid spaces.

just burn it? Or can something be done?
I can't answer what is correct, but personally, I would have sanded or washed it off outdoors wearing an appropriate mask and then used it as planned.

The mold growth stops as soon as you remove the conditions for it.
