Hello,
Recently bought the family's first house built in 1969. We want to preserve as much of the era's style as possible, but some things need to be changed.
One such update is the two arches in the brick wall. We want to keep the wall but remove the arches so it becomes a smooth brick wall.
Is this possible and what is the best way to tackle this small challenge?

Grateful for help.

  • Arched brick wall niche with a decorative vase inside, part of a 1969 house renovation project aiming to create a smooth brick wall without arches.
  • Brown brick wall with two arched niches, each holding a decorative white urn. Ceiling has wooden panels; floor is covered with protective paper.

There is no problem driving away them, the issue is finding matching stone and getting the masonry of the new stones to blend in.

Stylish! Invaluable for memory moments.
One taps away the arch, tries to avoid having the whole wall above collapse (an arch always has a supporting function) and then bricks up the hole.
The biggest problem is finding suitable bricks and mortar. The actual job can be solved by a mason. I myself wouldn't have attempted it even though I'm normally not afraid of anything.

Hang pictures over and avoid a lot of problems and costs.

Choose a TV large enough to cover both.

Thanks for the answers - covering them up is not a completely bad idea actually. If electricity is drawn in the wall to those two lamps, then the cords to the TV can be hidden quite well 😊

Or contact a mason if they need to be removed.
