Hello, I now have time to renovate a house located on a family estate, but I have very little knowledge of renovation, so I am turning to this forum to try to get some help.
(if I've ended up in the wrong forum section, a moderator is welcome to place it correctly or tell me where I should put the post )
The house was built around 1950, and there was previously wallpaper on top of these so-called tetrex boards visible in the pictures (correct me if I'm wrong).
Now to my questions:
1. What should I do to achieve nice walls based on how they look now (photos attached)? Google mentions something about some type of plasterboard or smoothing compound? Someone has also mentioned using some type of fabric.
2. The house has an old heating system that uses an old stove in the kitchen to heat steam, which then goes up to the attic and comes down to the radiators spread across the two rooms. (I think it's a steam system, correct me if I'm wrong, attaching pictures.)
Should I dismantle this?
3. What is recommended to do with the ceiling and floors (you can also see these in the photos)? I don't even know the type or material of the ceiling style, and the floor is some kind of plastic mat, possibly hiding some kind of nicer wood floor, but since it was built in 1950, this is also unclear.
Thank you in advance for the help I hopefully get!
(I also apologize for any dirt or such in the pictures as this house is currently only used as storage.)
hi. first, you mean Tretex boards. they are porous and not suitable for mounting things on, hopefully, there is something more solid behind them...
now to the answers.
1. at least renovation plasterboard at 6.5mm, preferably regular plasterboards, and the best is to frame up new with extra insulation and the whole shebang
2. waterborne ... not steam, refill, BUT it looks like you have leaks under the radiators so they might be shot and need to be replaced... be ready with towels and buckets in case it leaks when you refill...
3. what do you need the house for and what standard do you require..., painting over the old is easier than tearing down and installing new...
