stupid question
should you let the electrical box stick out a bit then screw in a few screws and drill so the box ends up as far out as possible, or should you mount the box flush with the stud and screw in all the screws then drill?
both might work, but you might need longer screws if you mount the box flush.

There is usually a marking on the side that should align flush with the stud (outwards) for the box to be positioned correctly in relation to the drywall thickness.
I usually secure the board with a couple of screws so it's fixed in place, and not screw closest to where I'm going to drill out the box, then drill and finish screwing.
