I'm going to change the kitchen and remove the old tiles to put a panel/splash guard from IKEA. What should I do with the old adhesive underneath? Does it have to be removed, or can I apply construction adhesive over it and attach the panel to this? It's a gypsum wall and the adhesive is stuck very firmly.

  • Tiles removed from a kitchen wall, revealing adhesive. Tools and tiles are on the counter, and a blue spray bottle is nearby.

Had exactly the same dilemma when I remodeled the kitchen and needed to attach 1mm stainless steel plate on the wall where the tiles had been. A real pain to remove the tiles. If you're going to tear down the whole kitchen, you can do like the kitchen pros and cut away the entire drywall, replacing it with new.

You can probably also use joint compound, if it's okay with the measurements to build on the wall.

I had particle board behind the tiles, so I bought a wide chisel and chipped them off, but if I do it again, I'll remove the board it's all attached to and put up a new one, probably less work :) The chiseling took me over a day.
I see you can at least get the tiles off fairly whole, mine were impossible to remove like that, it was chipping bit by bit :sweat::sweat:
