I need some input from you before I proceed with a project that involves renovating a room on the upper floor of our Älvsbyhus.
The thing is, the previous owner has set up the upper floor consisting of three rooms in the strangest way. The studs for the wall panels are set horizontally and not as usual with cc 60 vertically. This meant that when they screwed up their chipboards, the joints were left hanging in the air resulting in wallpaper cracks. No vapor barrier was installed in the walls, only in the ceiling.
During the renovation of the first room, I tore down all the walls, re-studded, installed a vapor barrier, and then put up chipboard with gypsum on top. Done and dusted, but a lot of extra work just to get the vapor barrier behind the panels.
Now to my thought,
could I put the vapor barrier on the outside of the existing wall panels and then screw new gypsum boards on top of the original panels? Not according to norm, but I heard a carpenter suggest this in another context. I can mention that the room is about 15 sqm with a sloped ceiling.
If this could be a way to go, the work would be considerably easier.
