I'm going to screw something into old holes in a wood/drywall. The screws (they need to be these) are a bit too small but the hole is also a little too small for a plug.

Is there something you can coat the screw with before screwing it in that will make it hold better?

Thinking of something like silicone but that hardens or has an adhesive effect.

Wood glue and a matchstick/toothpick can sometimes be a simple solution for similar problems. But maybe it won't provide sufficient strength for this case?

sounds good. Should you first let the wood stick dry with the glue in the hole? Before screwing in the screw?

I have screwed it in directly. But I don't really know what is best. However, I have avoided putting stress on the screw before the glue has dried.

Glue wet, the screw pushes/pulls apart the stick and the fibers together with the glue form threads around the screw.

But use a toothpick or a piece of a popsicle stick instead of a matchstick.

If it's difficult to remove the screw later, heat it with a soldering iron.
