Hello, I have moved into an apartment building, built in 1963, the house is brick. Now I'm going to put up a wall-mounted bookshelf. When I drill into the wall, it feels like a board, but not plasterboard. It's about 15-20 mm and then it's empty. I can't find any studs and am now unsure of what kind of wall it is. I've talked to the neighbors, but haven't gotten any clear answers. What do you think it is and what kind of wall plug should I use?

At that time, it was most common for only the facade itself to be made of brick. The house itself was built with wooden studs and wooden panels. Unless it was a large multi-family building made of concrete/lightweight concrete.

It makes sense that you drill through a wooden panel and then you are somewhere between the studs in the wall. If it is a panel of good quality (not porous Treetex), you can attach things to it with wood screws. Otherwise, you have to screw into the studs, normally with 60 cm spacing. If that doesn't work, you have to remove the existing panels and put up OSB and plasterboard instead.

It seems you are drilling through a wooden board and then you're somewhere between the studs in the wall. If it's a high-quality wooden board (not porous Treetex), you can fasten things to it with wood screws. Otherwise, you need to screw into the studs, typically spaced 60 cm apart. If that doesn't work, you may need to remove the existing boards and put up OSB and plasterboard instead.
No, it's not wood, more like some form of plaster, but I can't find the studs, the same sound all the time.

Have you checked with the association or the landlord? Those who have lived there for a while probably know about the condition of the walls and can provide clues/tips.

Image? What is the color of the drilling dust? Could it be that you have plaster and have come across a cavity behind it? How many holes have you tried?

I agree with BirgitS, it's unlikely that interior walls are made of brick from that year, it's more likely to be some form of sheet material but could also be slag plate even though it's unlikely.

Concrete block "gråsugga" I would think.

I've posted a question on the association's forum but haven't gotten any bites. When I drill, there's gray plaster/concrete about 15-20 mm, then completely empty about 30-40 mm, then possibly brick. There should be studs, but I can't find any when I knock, the same sound all the time.
