I'm going to start sealing the inside of the windows to "lock" the durable plastic against the window. The idea is to cut the plastic and fold it between the frame and the window frame, then lock it with a backing strip and seal it with compound.
This is my first time doing this, and the first question is whether this is the right approach?
The next question is what should I use to seal? The compound should be vapor-tight to serve its purpose. I have previously used Tachodicht http://www.befestigungsfuchs.de/Baustoffe/Dampfsperren-Winddichtung/Folienkleber/1-Kartusche-Original-TACODICHT-Folienkleber-fuer-Dampfsperre-Klebeband to seal the plastic against the foundation wall among other things. This one costs about the same as half a latex sealant at the hardware store, and the question is whether it's suitable? The compound is gray, but considering there will be window trim and a window sill, it doesn't matter.
At the bottom, the windows rest on a bottom plate insulation that I intend to attach the plastic to...
Great suggestion! Definitely much easier to tape than to mess with sealant. However, the issue that may arise is that the tape is not covered by the trim. Maybe this can be solved with some measurements and keeping your tongue straight when applying the tape.
Anyone have alternatives or suggestions for sealant?
I used latex sealant from byggmax for 8.95kr each myself.
I've tried this and similar ones a couple of times. Cracks after a while.
Invest in a more expensive sealant instead. There are reasonable ones suitable for indoors starting at around 50 kr. It's a negligible cost when we're talking renovation.
There you go. Quickly covered the edges with plaster after sealing so didn't see any cracks but then I'll revise myself and say like the above that you should buy a more expensive sealing compound
