How to make holes for many boxes in plaster?
Personally, I've experimented a bit with homemade small jigs with an outward-facing center point that I placed in the boxes. I had several for different box sizes and thought it was very clever.
However, over time, I noticed that the precision in such solutions is still quite limited. The fundamental problem, I think, is that as long as the holes aren't sawed, it's naturally impossible to hold the board exactly where it should be. Instead, you have to hold it "in front" and try to see that it's centered where it should be, before pressing and making the mark... it often ends up a few millimeters off. Especially if you're working in an old house where things might not be so parallel and perpendicular. And you have that fundamental problem even with hole-in-one, laser, and similar tools.
So nowadays, I measure, and I think it's best that way.

I experience the same. However, I use the centering tools that came with the hole cutters to successfully measure to the center in the boxes. Of course, it's just as good to make your own centering gadgets; the idea is to measure to the center of the box.Farzan said:Personally, I have experimented a bit with homemade small jigs with an outward-facing center point that I placed in the boxes. The fundamental problem, I think, is that as long as the holes are not cut, it's naturally not possible to hold the board exactly as it should sit, so you have to hold it "in front" and try to see if it is centered over where it should sit before pressing and getting the mark... it too often ends up a few millimeters off. Especially if you're working in an old house where things may not be so parallel and square. And you have that fundamental problem even with hole-in-one, laser, and the like.
So nowadays, I measure and find it works best that way.
