Hello!
I've built my own electrical cabinet out of MDF, and the idea was for it to look like a wall rather than a cabinet, since it's the first thing you see when you enter the front door.
It will be painted white, have a baseboard, etc., BUT to be able to open the door (which is the front part), there needed to be a gap between the wall and the hinges (concealed hinges), which takes away the feeling that it's a wall...
I want to be able to hide the hinges in a nice way but can't figure out how, does anyone have any tips?

  • Homemade MDF cabinet door mimicking a wall, with visible hinge gaps near a white interior door; a drill is on the floor.
  • MDF panel with a visible gap near hinges, measured with a ruler, as part of a custom electrical cabinet project designed to look like a wall.
  • MDF panel door with visible hinge against a white painted wall, showing a gap needed for door opening in a customized electrical cabinet project.

Wouldn't it be better to use the right type of hinge? Look at how it works in a more modern kitchen with the doors.

Edit: I see now that it will hit the door's casing.

How do you mean? In kitchen cabinets, there's a recessed cutout in the doors where one side of the hinges is attached, and then it clicks in. It's a bit too complex for a DIY builder like me to recess in an MDF 😅

I should perhaps add that the wall is not straight and even either, as it was built in the 60s from blåbetong, so it's very porous and uneven. To make the "door" sit straight, the hinges have had to be set slightly differently from each other.

Leaf hinges, they are made for your sole purpose.
Have installed it myself for a door to kattvind.

Lamellar hinges are a bit tricky to install, so maybe not for you.

I've installed them myself for a door to an attic space.
I didn't even know they existed, but I googled a bit and found ones for drilling (so you don't have to carve out holes). It seems like a much simpler solution, thank you so much! 🙏
