I will try to fix up a basement corner that was previously an extended paint cabinet.
Behind it was a plastered surface (now gone) and a brick wall.
I thought I'd continue with the pine panel that is already there.
But what can I attach to the wall underneath? I have an area of about 5 cm that needs to be extended, including the panel. I'm considering drilling, plugging, and attaching one-inch lumber. Then nail the panel on top of this. Unconventional, right?

On the other wall facing the corner, there's a hatch and then comes the chipboard.
There, I'll "frame" with custom-sized raw wood across and then attach the chipboard to these.

That way, the panel and chipboard meet in the corner.
But after everything I've read, this doesn't feel like a great idea in a basement, even though the material is similar all around and seems to have held up well.

Metal studs and minerit are all well and good, but how else does one manage to make it look somewhat nice? Or is it better to just tear down the other stuff and do it right from the ground up?
