Hello!

While removing old wallpaper, we discovered a large gap between the panels in the corners. What would you use to fill the cavity visible in the picture?

  • Crack between wall panels in a corner after wallpaper removal, highlighting a gap to be filled.
  • A gap between wall boards with a measuring tape showing width, highlighting an issue found during wallpaper removal.
What are you going to cover the wall with?

We're planning to use renovation wallpaper and paint over it.

How deep is the gap? Maybe fill with painter's caulk.

Spackel, sand, painters caulk...

At its deepest, 4cm. I'm mostly thinking about what will be most stable before I patch the corner with paper tape. It would be unfortunate if it cracks.

From previous work, I see there is some sort of white mass filled in the gap, but it has dried and just fell out when we removed the previous wallpaper.

Skip painter's caulk if you plan to use paper tape, just glue it in place after you've filled the cavity with filler.

Okay, do you have any experience with how deep you can apply putty? Is it regular wall putty? Or is there a special type?

Regular medium filler is good enough.. it sinks a bit, so two rounds might be needed.

I would apply plaster putty (or husfix) so it is hard. When you apply the renovation wallpaper, cut it in the corner and then use latex sealant before painting.

I have successfully filled wide gaps with spray foam. The condition is that the boards are tightly fixed so the foam doesn't find its way in somewhere and push out the board.

The foam obviously expands a lot, so make sure to mask properly so it doesn't stick on the outside or on the floor for that matter. Then it's just a matter of cutting it clean once it has dried properly.

Bottningslist and acrylic sealant

Are they masonite walls?

I have done something similar with grout bought from byggmax, it might be a bit of a waste with grout, but it has worked very well. Then tape, spackle, and paint. It has lasted from late summer until now. Not a single crack yet
