Hello,
I'm planning to start building an American-style porch, which means having a deck with a roof extending from the house. I was thinking of using slightly thicker posts than the standard 95x95 to support the roof, and I saw that there are glulam beams 115x115 that could work well if painted.

Initially, I had planned to place footings at the outer edge to set the posts into, but it seems that regular post bases are only available for 95x95, so the question is how to attach the posts?

Are there any special post bases (that aren't too hard to find) or would it work just as well to set a carrier beam into the footings and then notch the glulam beams to attach them to the carrier beam? Will it hold just as well?

You can use plintjärn.

But 115x115 sounds cumbersome (doesn't fit into just any miter/gear saw, etc.), I would have used something like 2 pieces of 45x95 that you cover with panel boards or 3 pieces of 45x145.

Exactly, I hadn't even considered that, I've always been thinking of ready-made pedestals in my head, but of course, you can get arbitrary distance with pedestal iron if you cast them yourself...

The reason for 115 is to make it look nice, I know it's more complicated but there's still a big difference aesthetically if you avoid visible joints and screws in the post.

What do you think about notching the posts and attaching to the bearing beam, is that a bad idea in terms of structural strength?

You get less strength with notching, but even 95x95 is sufficient to bear the weight if you do not have too much distance between the posts.

It is very simple to saw into such a beam with an ordinary traditional handsaw.

I don't think there are any problems notching a larger post compared to taking a smaller one, screw properly and it will go fine.

It's probably just a matter of trimming with a chisel so that the post base fits the post if you're using 115x115mm.

It is also possible to saw 2 slots, press the stolpsko into the wood, and then drive 3-4 screws through.
