Hi! I have a Dewalt DW745, and now I need to cut a rabbet in 2 pieces of 50cm long strips measuring 18x18mm. See image.

The table saw does not have a dado blade, but the fence has a fold-down L-shaped profile to be able to rip narrow materials with a bit better control. However, I think I've seen some tip on YouTube for doing this in a quick and safe way...

I can cut the strips from a wider 18mm board, but that probably doesn't really help?

  • Diagram showing an L-shaped groove with dimensions: 18mm base, 6mm depth. Related to cutting a rabbet in wood with a Dewalt DW745 table saw.
I would have cut the recess first with 3 cuts and moved the fence, then cut off the entire 18 mm strip. And then the same process again for strip 2.

Yes, that was what I had intended to avoid, moving the stop in millimeter steps and repeating. But probably better than working with 18 mm strips and splitting the entire notch from both directions, so to speak.

Agree with Kane (y), otherwise cut it on the flat side 9mm in, then cut it on the edge 6mm. It can be hard to get pressure against the fence.

Make the 3 small cuts at each short end of the piece, then rip 18mm. That way, you don't have to adjust the fence 6 times instead of 3.

Good luck (and buy a handheld router :geek:)

(Yes, a router and router table would have been just perfect in this case:) )

Yes, that's usually how you do it. Upright sounds unstable. Non-table mounted router is available. It usually takes me an hour just to set the fence, secure it, set up the router, etc., carefully routing in many passes to avoid chipping. I really want to learn to use the table saw more.
