I am going to install new furring strips and plasterboards and I am wondering how the furring strips should be installed in this case?
I have been told across the rafters but then they will be installed the same way as the current ones.
Is that how it should be done?
Or lay the furring strips across the ceiling?
Thanks in advance

Do you want to lower the ceiling height or why do you want it sparse?

Mostly to reroute the electricity more easily!

Since the ceiling looks stable now, I would place the furring strips in a way that best suits the desired direction of the drywall or alternatively facilitates wiring.

I probably wouldn't have reduced the ceiling height further if you look at how the ceiling is positioned in relation to the window. Maybe take down the existing ceiling and install new spars and electrical work underneath?

Okay, are you thinking from an aesthetic perspective or for some other reason?
The attic is filled with sawdust so then I also get down all the insulation..

The attic is filled with shavings so I'll have to remove all the insulation as well..
100% aesthetic, but to each his own. I myself have a house that I've had for a few years with a nice original ceiling height that has been significantly lowered, so it's mostly me who cares about ceiling height 🙂 I took down the beadboard in the bedroom myself and put up new furring strips. No shavings and dirt underneath, though. Just fiberglass so no major work.

Okay! Then it sounded like you had it a bit easier than if I'm going to replace it☺️
But thank you so much for your input!

Can't you just trace in, alternatively, remove a suitable board and place the empty pipe in the space you get? Then cover with plaster.
