I am in the process of completely renovating the summer cottage and have redone the large room where this stove is located. We have improved the upper part with white and changed from brick-colored to gray on the lower part.

I need a good suggestion for what I can do with the shelf, polished brown stone doesn't look very nice. I didn't dare to remove them, afraid that more would break.

Paint? Apply some thin tiles or mosaic on it? It needs to withstand some heat as well...

It's not really clear from the picture, but the lower part is light gray. (previously brick red)

Yeah, maybe it could be. But I really don't like brown...
 
Remove the marble slab and build with either 1, 2, 2/12” bricks according to the desired design, then plaster with c-bruk and then paint in the desired color.
