I am going to make an opening in a wall from the kitchen to an extended living room, with a height difference of 76 cm down to the living room. The opening and staircase will be just over 3 meters wide.

If I make three steps, they will be 19 cm high, which is a bit high according to the advice I have found. The step depth would then be 25 cm according to the formula.

If I add another step, making it four, I get down to just over 15 cm high steps with a depth of at least 30 cm. Then the staircase becomes 120 cm instead of 75 cm.

Of course, it takes up space in the room.

The one with lower step height might be more pleasant and you can sit on it, but it might also seem strange with such low steps.

And the other with something too high?

Annoying measurements!

Use the same step depth, 25 cm, but with a step height of 15.2. Nail together a simple staircase and test it before doing something more serious. I still have my "simple" one from 2004. After sanding down the sun-damaged parquet, I asked my wife if I should make a nicer one, but she looked puzzled.... Mine is in pressure treated 45*220, well-dried.....

Operate with a 19 cm step height. It is the maximum according to recommendations but not unreasonably high. (Similarly, a 25 cm step depth is OK, it is at the minimum recommendation).
