For home use, I would probably attach a nailing plate or equivalent on each side of a beam, with the plate extending quite a bit. Then drill holes for pins in the nailing plates and the posts, meaning the adjustment is done from the side.Filletj said:

How would you have solved it instead of setting a continuous rod/pipe?
The purpose is to protect if something happens, and it is extremely rare for anyone to need to dump a bar, and when it happens, you can check the stays and make new ones at the slightest suspicion that they are damaged.
Otherwise, you can create adjustable protection by having a base height and finding a system to stack beams on top, for example, with some boards on either side where you place the beams in between.
I can think of more, but the systems should be simple so that they are used.
