Hi, I am going to replace the siding on the garage that has been there for a long time and has dried apart. I have a few questions. I can see that behind the siding there is no wind barrier or nailing battens, but the current siding is directly on the studs (like it might have been built in the past?).

If I now replace it and want to add a wind barrier and nailing battens to create some space, how will it work at the roof with the metal sheeting and at the foundation, since the measurements won't match anymore. Am I thinking correctly:

1. The metal sheeting at the top: should I just shift it, or alternatively get a wider one so it fits the new measurement?
2. The gap at the foundation doesn't matter and is rather an advantage so that water doesn't flow directly onto the foundation. Should something be installed at the bottom to direct the water away or just leave it as is? What does the carpenter do? :)

I would gladly appreciate tips from those more knowledgeable than me in this area.
Close-up of old garage wood paneling with visible gaps, showing weathered texture and knots. Green garage wall with wooden panels, no wind protection or battens visible. A metal ladder is leaning against the wall. Arrows point to the roof and foundation.

perhaps consider protection against mice at the bottom edge
