We have a steel gate that is cast in the ground.
How difficult might it be to remove it?
Can it be done by hand and how heavy would it be in that case?

  • A steel gate anchored in the ground, connected to a wooden fence, surrounded by grass and a few plants.
It probably depends on how ambitious one was when it was fastened with concrete...
Try digging around and jiggling the post, and you should quickly get an idea of whether it's a large block or if it's cast in a tube and how heavy it seems to be.

If you want to do a proper job with gates, it is common to cast both posts together below ground with a reinforced "limpa" across the opening underground. This is to prevent the posts from moving individually and to provide extra support to the post that carries the gate. You'll simply need to dig and check.
