Let's say you're building an exterior wall with wooden studs and want a horizontal insulation layer on the outside. A colleague mentioned that you should place the bottom stud just above the sill to avoid a thermal bridge. Should you then place a 45mm strip of insulation between the bottom stud and the sill paper (which would then need to be as wide as the sill + 45mm)?
Then I thought - this should apply to the top plate too. For it to align with the insulation width (the rolls are 555mm wide to fit in 600mm compartments), the standing studs should be 4 compartments + 45/2mm + 45/2mm = 2445mm. Yet, you never see this measurement on pre-cut studs. Or should the studs be 2400mm so there's 45mm left in the (top?) compartment to use as a strip between the bottom stud and the sill paper? How do you do it?
