The eternal question, which side should be up? Happy face is my spontaneous thought, but looking at my newly purchased decking, if I lay the happy face, the deck is already u-shaped. Which is not good.

Stack of wooden decking boards with visible wood grain and cut ends, suggesting a construction or renovation project.

Fina sidan upp tror jag det rätta svaret är
Absolutely. Provided that the fine side is not u-shaped. Or does the u straighten out if you screw from that side?

From carpenters I know, it's always happy face up.

The carpenter I talked to said the fine side up. But if the fine side is inside the u-shape, it feels so-so.

Happy face up, meaning the core side up, is according to the textbook, which then dries and straightens out. However, as mentioned above, theory doesn't always match practice, and therefore it's probably not a bad idea to opt for the nice side up.

Interesting. Sour gubbe = the water runs off.

I laid decking in the summer of 2019, putting the nice side up.

BUT

There is a huge difference between a happy or sad face.

The moral of the story is to always lay the sad face up; it's much more comfortable to walk on! (y)

No, no, to the article.
I have installed many decking boards in my days and with the core side up it makes a smiling face on the end and not a water drain.
However, they should always be installed with the core side up as the other side is usually the one that cracks and looks the ugliest.

Happy face, sad face - doesn't the article contradict itself when it comes to the nuclear side and whether the water should drain off?

But exactly the opposite…. 🙄

The main reason for placing the core side up is that drying cracks are fewer and smaller on that side. The further from the center of the log, the larger the cracks become. Göran Palm, construction engineer and inspector, and forest technician.
