Hello!

I've been searching like crazy but can't find a definitive answer, so I'm trying to ask instead :)

(The house in question has walls of unburned brick and lime plaster on both sides of the brick, which should matter for the answer to the question.)

I'm renovating the kitchen and have taken down all the cabinets and the old fiberboard panels. Since the walls are quite uneven and I can't be bothered to plaster them smooth again, I was thinking of putting up drywall that will then be tiled.

One wall is done, although it was a bit cumbersome because I first put up drywall and noticed it wasn't straight at all, so I had to build a frame outside the drywall and put new drywall = perfectly straight.

The rest of the walls are much straighter since the plaster is still completely intact. So I see no advantage in building a frame first. But a colleague said I should be careful about putting drywall directly against an exterior wall due to potential moisture problems in the future. When I look for answers to the question, I only find pages talking about vapor barriers and plastic in the walls. But there's none of that in these walls, here it's necessary for moisture to be able to travel through the materials...

What's the deal, can I dare to put the drywall directly against the plastered wall (which is an exterior wall) or do I need to frame it for an air gap? The fiberboard panels weren't moist and they were nailed directly into the wall, but maybe that was just pure luck - who knows?

No problems in a warm space.

It's worse in basements which are often a bit colder and thus have higher relative humidity. This becomes most noticeable during late summer/fall.

Since you have removed the tretex (which insulates much better than plaster), you have also moved the dew point even further out. In other words, you should have a lower risk of getting condensed moisture in the wall now than with the tretex.
 
Oh, damn how relieved I was by that answer! It is not a huge problem to frame up, but it does cause some trouble with windows and doors. Thank you so much, I'll proceed as planned :)
