We would like to create a gravel path behind our house. It should be possible to push a wheelbarrow and stroller on it and walk, but no car traffic or the like. According to what we've heard, we should dig about 10 cm, lay ground cloth and crushed stone 0-16 and then 3 cm gravel. Since it's a bit difficult to get the stones to us, we are considering skipping the top layer of crushed stone and instead putting back what we dug up (not the upper centimeters but maybe the bottom of what we dug out). Where we live, we have very sandy soil. Has anyone tried something similar and knows how it turns out? One of many reasons why we want a gravel path instead of just trampled earth as it is now is that we want to avoid lots of weeds on the path. I know gravel is not weed-proof, but right now it's a jungle. ;-) I'm mostly wondering if you worsen the weed situation in the gravel path if you use your own soil/sand from the ground instead of crushed stone, because in your own ground there are likely root weeds.
I thought it would be silly to have the fabric directly under the top gravel layer, partly because it would probably come up and be visible but also because I would think the gravel would slide around a bit on it...
