Hello
1: I’m going to glue together 2 pieces of timber to make a post, as recommended by many. But how do you usually do it? All screws from one side and then place it so it's seen the least? Also, how do you position the timber against each other?
2. The post shoe is about 100mm; do you tighten it to 90 or should you add some spacer?
3. Free-hanging post, or all the way down to the foundation (possibly with sill paper) pressure-treated timber?
4. I’m going to attach a support beam to the wall with lag screws that go through the panel and into the timber (vertical plank wall, I think it’s called). The support beam is 45*195 and 2.6m long. Is one row of screws enough or should there be two, and how closely should you space them?
5. Due to height issues, the plan is to screw and glue a 45*45 as a strip at the bottom to be able to lay floor joists 45*145 there (it’s just a span of 1.2m). On the outer edge, they rest ON the joist/support beam.
