Hello!
We live in an old modular house from the 60s. We had the windows and patio doors replaced a few weeks ago and then noticed something we hadn't really thought about before. In the original design, it seems like the windows and patio doors were part of the load-bearing construction, i.e., the frames were load-bearing. It was clear when everything was removed that several load-bearing studs had simply been cut.
As far as I can see, by just judging the thickness of the outer wall with the knowledge that the studs are 95, I cannot figure out how there could be any reinforcing beam that transfers the load.
You can see that it dips when you stand and look at it. We've started getting worried about this now and have begun to wonder what could happen during a severe storm. Would you even get insurance money if the construction turns out to be substandard?
Do insurance companies have structural engineers attached to them who sort out things like this? Or do they not deal with these issues? How else do you get hold of a sensible assessor to discuss this with? The municipality?
