We are rebuilding our kitchen and will build a new wall in front of a corner. The new wall should be about 45 degrees to the chimney. At the other end of the new wall, it is a regular wooden wall (Planning to have a corner stove in front of the wall.) We thought that it would be "just" to frame it and then put a plasterboard on, but then it occurred to us that a wooden frame against the chimney is probably not allowed... Can we put a mineral board first against the chimney and then attach the wooden frame? Or how else can we solve it?

Hello,

Here you can get as many DIFFERENT answers as there are chimney sweeping masters...

I had the same dilemma. On the internet, there were too many divergent answers, so I called the local company. Got some answers. When I called back again for additional questions, I got completely different answers. Therefore, I called a third time, and then the answers were about the same as during the second call.

You must not in any way enclose the chimney in a way that makes it impossible to check its tightness. What I was allowed to do was to use metal studs (And that was probably the answer to your question), and put up plasterboard. But in the ceiling and floor trim, I should make holes into the chimney to be able to check for possible smoke.

Otherwise, you could make inspection hatches so you could insert a camera for inspection.

"All sides of the chimney on all floors should be inspectable."

On one floor, I had already glued plasterboard to one side of the chimney. This made him very doubtful as he couldn't see if it was the chimney that was tight, or if it was the plasterboard/glue that sealed it. However, it ended with him saying at the inspection, "Never mind, let's hope there isn't a leak right here..."

Good luck

Now we have built the wall, so let's hope we did it right... We checked with a chimney sweep and were allowed to use a wooden stud since there were no hot channels on that side. An inspection with a camera should be possible where the fan goes through the wall, if needed.
