We are going to build a foundation for an iron stove against the existing chimney breast, the foundation will be a brickwork of red brick, the floor is a thick wooden floor with a chipboard on top and a plastic mat, the strength is probably not a concern as I have the possibility to support from below in the basement which is not used.
The question is just where to start, I would like to lay some board to start the masonry on, it doesn't feel quite right to start masonry directly on the plastic mat, nor to remove it; maybe a possibility would be to have a substantial floor plate underneath everything?
If you have any tips on how you've done it, I would be grateful

How large/heavy foundation are we talking about, one-two layers of bricks, or significantly more? If it's not extremely heavy, perhaps a floor gypsum board as a base would work well, alternatively minerit.
