I have started renovating one of our bathrooms and discovered that the joists in the floor are made of particleboard. How is the strength of these? They are spaced at 40 cm center-to-center and previously there was a 19 mm particleboard on top. The house was built in 1980 so it has obviously held for a while, but the concern is what happens in case of a potential water leak. Do we need to reinforce in some way or is it enough to add a couple of layers of boards?
I meant that it was the joists in the floor that were made of chipboard, cc 40 and about 40 cm deep. I have asked around a bit about this but it seems that no one has heard of this, to say the least, original solution before. But the house has, as mentioned, stood for 30 years so far, but now we were thinking of installing a bathtub.
