Fix the stone stairs before laying wooden flooring on them
I have a basement staircase that isn't very pretty. I'm going to lay wood flooring that will continue down into this staircase. But I feel it needs to be fixed up before doing this. There was glued carpet on it before. I've sanded it, so it's fairly smooth. But still far from good. Loose paint in places that peels off if you start scraping it, a lot of glue remaining, etc.
How would you proceed? I'm thinking about using a paint stripper to remove what I can. Then maybe apply a very thin layer of self-leveling compound on each step so they are smooth and level. Since there will be flooring on top, it should only need to be smooth and not super durable? Right or wrong thinking? How would you do it?

I'm thinking a bit about using a paint scraper to tackle what I can.
Then perhaps leveling compound each step very thinly so they are smooth and level. Since flooring will be on top, it just needs to be smooth and not super durable?

How did it go with the staircase?
I'm guessing it's finished by now and that there are some nice pictures and a construction description available?! 😃
I think it went wellmr.Ola said:
Bought a bunch of chisels at Biltema and chipped away.
The top step, which was a bit higher, I chipped down and leveled with self-leveling compound to match the floor.
The result was like this:
