Really expensive and really crappy I think, because as you say, they are super sensitive to damage.
I don't see any downside to using real wood?

Maybe not a big risk but not entirely unthinkable either.
Who sells them? Doesn't hurt to take a look at them.

Yes, that's how I remember we did it, it was quite a few years ago, so I don't recall in detail, but there must be something to screw the gles into.

We have used the styrofoam model of moldings, a bit easier to glue them up than to screw/nail wooden moldings, especially if they’re wide. But they are expensive as hell. I've also looked at the "beams" in styrofoam, they look very natural, so I could definitely use them in the right place. Hitting something is rather uncommon on the ceiling; what speaks against it is rather that it feels better to make them myself for real :cool:
