We live in a house built on the current site around the year 1900.
We are considering exposing the beams on the ground floor ceiling. As the ceiling currently appears, there are less fine fibreboard panels installed on battens. Underneath this is a stretched paper ceiling or some variant, as there seem to be 7-8 layers mixed with wallpaper and paper. Underneath this is a plank ceiling, and I don't know how the beams look below this.
The house previously had an unfinished attic. It is now finished, insulated, and heated.
Does anyone have experience with exposing beams and how much work it involves?
Will the house be weakened in its construction if the plank ceiling is removed?
Current ceiling height is about 2200. The floor structure is about 350 thick.
The plank ceiling is not painted, but as mentioned before, the attic is now insulated and finished. I therefore don't think heat loss would make a significant difference.

We were going to do this in a turn-of-the-century villa... 18-1900s... Unfortunately, it turned out that the beams were infested with all sorts of nasty little creatures... My tip is to check everything first... then we can talk...
