Hello, my apartment door is of an older model. It probably doesn't withstand burglary or fire, and definitely not sound.

I've heard that you can fix old doors so they meet sound and fire requirements like newer ones. Does anyone know how?

What's most important to me is making the door quieter.

The best option is to completely replace the door with a metal door from Daloc or Swedoor. However, you can fix old doors by applying laminate, etc. A hot tip if you want to do some work yourself is to:

1) Install new sealing strips.
2) From the inside, don't use the 7-lever lock. Remove the cover plate there, tape it over, and fill it with a bit of mineral wool or similar. Check to ensure it can be locked and opened properly from the outside. If it works, put the cover plate back, and you've gained a few dB in terms of direct transmission.

Another idea is that in some older apartments, there is often a deep frame where an interior door used to be. You can then mount an interior door...
In old doors, the mail slot is also a dilemma where sound leaks...
In that case, you could consider a heavy curtain/drape on the inside. This effectively absorbs sound in speech frequencies and all the way down to, say, 100 Hz, likely reducing the sound level by at least half (6 dB).

I have received suggestions to put a floor gypsum board on the inside of the door. Sounds quite reasonable, but is it possible to get veneer so that I can restore the original look?

Melting on laminate as you write about, how does it work?

Floor gypsum on the inside can certainly work, but after all, the airborne sound isn't a picnic either. That's where the high-frequency noise lingers. A heavier door does help with lower frequencies, though.

Laminate on the outside that you glue on to classify the door for sound and fire, and to some extent burglary...

But I say floor gypsum helps about 20% of what a heavy curtain does... I can promise that!!

Where can you get such laminate or what type of company might be expected to make it?

I unfortunately can't answer that. But check with a local high-quality building supply store, not Buildmax, Bauhaus, or those, but go for a bigger one... Like Beijer or something. You could probably also inquire with companies that handle doors; there are a few... However, I can't mention the name of any as I don't have any...
