Pre-drilling seems to be an almost forgotten technique .

Stupid question, but don't you attach the drywall to the studs even if you have OSB behind?? At least that's what I've done... the drywall screw is not particularly thick, what I've used for double mounting I recall was 3.5 for metal studs or 3.9 for wood studs.

The carpenters I've seen don't usually do that.

It's probably me being overly meticulous (as always). I followed the Norgips installation instructions:

"All layers of boards should be attached to the frame during screwed installation regardless of the board type." and later "When mounting wood-based boards behind plasterboards, the plasterboards should be screwed into the frame.".
