The carpenters I've seen don't usually do that.

It's probably me being overly meticulous (as always). I followed the Norgips installation instructions:

"All layers of boards should be attached to the frame during screwed installation regardless of the board type." and later "When mounting wood-based boards behind plasterboards, the plasterboards should be screwed into the frame.".
