Hello

I'm about to install FTX and I'm in the process of removing supply air vents. I see that one of the holes is made in the load-bearing beam above the window. The hole is 110mm in diameter and is located 160mm from the stud on the left side where the load-bearing beam starts. The load-bearing beam is 50mm thick and 220mm wide.

Now to my question. Should I reinforce the load-bearing beam in some way or will it be fine? We don't have an upper floor, it's a roof with trusses above.

  • A 110mm diameter hole cut in a wooden beam above a window, discussed for air vent installation and structural concerns.
  • A room with large windows, ceiling light, and a ladder. Holes visible in the wall above windows where ducts or vents were removed.
Probably doesn't matter. The hole has probably been there since the house was built, besides, very little stress that close to the support for the load-bearing beam.

Thanks for the reply GoC. Valves were installed a couple of years ago and before we bought the house. So they haven't been there since the house was built. But otherwise, does it look okay? I myself reason that the hole is in the middle (vertically) of the beam. Had it been at the lower edge, then reinforcement might have been more applicable.
