Drill in the basement - Stud finder
Hello,
I tried drilling in the basement with a screwdriver. The first 3-4cm works well, probably just plaster or something similar. Then it stops, and these stud detectors seem to only have a scanning depth of 2cm. How can I know what is stopping the drilling?
I was thinking of going to rent a cordless hammer drill but would like to know what I'm drilling into. Unfortunately, I don't have an electrical outlet nearby to use my drill machines, so I need a cordless/battery-powered drill.
I tried drilling with a metal drill bit but got nowhere.
I'm planning to drill so I can insert a brown plug.
Thanks in advance.

I think it's concrete, then you need to have the hammer setting on the machine, otherwise it will stop suddenly. If you run at the highest speed for a while and then look at the drill bit, if it has turned blue, it's concrete.
Extension cord then, stud finder depth, there are several, Jula's goes 38 mm, there are those that go deeper.
Google for stud finder.

The drill bit became kind of black, but I didn't drill for long as the screwdriver started to smell and I didn't want to burn it out.
Unfortunately, I don't have an extension cord of about 20m.
I guess I'll have to look for detectors that can deep search more than 2cm.

Extension cords are always needed, so if you don't have one, it's time to buy. Don't buy the cheapest ones as they only tangle into miserable knots. Buy a more robust rubber cable at least 15 meters long. Then add an inexpensive rotary hammer and you'll easily get through concrete. Rotary hammers are one of those products where it rarely pays off to buy professional machines since they're usually used so little, so buy a cheap one and you'll be satisfied.
I already have a percussion drill and a rotary hammer. Maybe I'll buy one like this at 25m, but I don't even know if that's enough, I live on the 2nd floor, so it should reach down 3 floors, maybe I'll need 2 of them. http://m.clasohlson.com/se/Skarvsladd-25-m-IP20/32-2302
I'll check what it costs to rent a cordless drill at Clasohlson or Ramirent.

Spontaneously, it could be as simple as encountering the reinforcement embedded in the concrete.
Can the hole be moved a centimeter in any direction?
Sounds strange with such long distances to a power outlet...

Unfortunately, I can't run the cord through the window and into the port, it’s too far.
There was nothing wireless to rent at clasohlson either.
I'll check with Ramirent or maybe buy extension cables.
I also need to buy a detector, I don’t want to drill into any water or electrical lines.

Can't imagine that electricity or water is embedded in the basement wall. Don't use brown plugs, buy gray nylon plugs in the right size, then it will sit well.

The plug's color indicates its dimension. Found this plug series:
https://www.beijerbygg.se/wcsstore/.../85/sheet_ess_1_397484_131210_130528_0037.pdf
but I think the construction is junk.
This construction is much better according to my experience:
https://www.byggmax.se/spik-och-skruv/plugg-och-expander/nylonplugg-p2420470
Available from different manufacturers. Fischer, Mitutoyo, etc.
Nylon is a much stronger plastic than polyethylene. Polyethylene is the same as ICA bags.
