Drill holes in wall, ceiling and floor.
Planning to install a new kitchen and lower the ceiling, which means there will be a lot of drilling in the ceiling and walls, as well as the floor. How can you know where the water pipes and electricity run? Don't want to risk drilling into anything like that. (The house is from 1971)
I have once accidentally drilled into an electrical cable, it wasn't supposed to be there as this was in the middle of a wall with no outlets nearby. They seemed to have routed the cable "bird's way."
I've also experienced that water pipes can run very shallow.

If you open the ceiling box and look inside, you should get an indication of which direction the electricity is coming from.
You might want to have the electricity turned off for safety's sake, but you should see cables coming through some hole in the ceiling box and then determine a likely direction.
You can also look into electrical outlets and possibly determine a likely direction.
But don't fiddle with the cables when the power is on if you can avoid it.

Cable locators/line locators can find both electrical cables and water pipes with good precision. However, the professional equipment costs a lot, but maybe you can see if you can rent one? I saw that they sell cheaper versions at Conrad, but I have no idea how good they are. One and a half thousand would be quickly earned money otherwise...

The ones I linked to on Conrad do have an active transmitter, the one Tony linked to is a "regular" detector without a transmitter as far as I can see.
Anyone with experience regarding precision differences? Spontaneously, it seems like it should be more accurate with a transmitter to locate pipes and electrical cables. Studs are another thing, of course
