Hi,

I have a question about the upcoming wall construction. I will be building with Megastone 150 and I'm contemplating the need to use drainage pipes behind the wall. The ground conditions mainly consist of sand, so I'm doubtful about the need for pipes. I plan to lay about 30 cm of drainage gravel behind the wall from the subbase up to the crest. The wall will slope from just over a meter down to about 20 cm. We've just redone the drainage and that's why I feel the need for pipes isn't that great, as the old drainage had a backfall of 15 cm at the well and we've never had any moisture problems from below in the basement (one room still has the floor dug up due to an ongoing bathroom project).

What makes pipes troublesome is that I would have to dig up the driveway to reach a lower level if that's the case, and it feels so-so.

Those of you who have experience with Megastone, or other retaining walls for that matter, how have you done it? Is it just silly not to prepare everything while you're at it? I'll probably dig it down just to have it done, but I wanted to check with you first.

Grateful for ideas, experiences, and thoughts :-)

If you feel uncertain about the issue, to pipe or not to pipe, lay your pipe when building, but wait with connecting it. If you then have problems, you can take on the job of connecting the pipe and directing the water away. The pipe will at least not cause any harm if it lies there without connection.
