Do you think the adhesive will stick to this stone surface?

Smooth polished stone around a fireplace. The gray is plaster residue.

Rub a little with coarse sandpaper, just to be on the safe side.

Primer on and then you take a fix for tile-on-tile... I used Bauhaus Probau on a previously tiled wall with glazed tiles and it worked well.
