We are planning to replace an old Roslagsspis with a modern insert with glass on both sides. To use the full depth, however, I need to cut the bricks where I've marked. The brick pillar is ~12cm deep and we need to shorten it by 4cm to make it level with the back wall of the fireplace.

Brick fireplace section marked for cutting, with nearby tools, to replace an old stove with a modern glass-front cassette.

The question is: will the fireplace survive the operation, or am I about to demolish my chimney stack? :D

There's probably an iron at the bottom of the opening, and then the question is how far in it goes on the wing. 4 cm isn't much, most likely the iron goes in as far as the stone visible there. They usually aren't that stingy. Place a support in the middle of the part that is towards this side of the photo and chisel out at the top edge towards the outside, a narrow groove towards the outside, then you can follow the iron and it stays in place on the rest.
