Hi!

I'm in the process of renovating our old staircase.
It is completely dangerous today because it is both steep and very shallow.

I've been thinking back and forth about how to make the staircase safer, more comfortable, and of course, stylish.

My latest idea is to completely remove the riser and install new, wider treads on top of the existing ones.

What do you think?
Any other ideas?

  • Old wooden stairs under renovation, missing risers and with new wider treads installed.
  • Old wooden staircase with visible wear; homeowner considers removing risers and installing wider treads for safety and aesthetics during renovation.
  • A wooden staircase under renovation with missing risers and wide treads; hallway with gray floor tiles and white panel walls nearby.

It is the distance from tread nose to tread nose that determines if the staircase is comfortable to walk on. If you add a board to each step, the distance doesn't change.
Make the staircase slip-resistant instead?
