Demolish load-bearing wall, put up beam questions
Hello again.
The renovation in our house is progressing. Now I have come across the next small problem.
On the ground floor, we plan to open up a wall between the dining room and the living room. There is a door in the wall right now, but we want to widen that opening.
The questions I have are, what dimension should the glulam beam be?
Do I need posts to support it, or can it rest on the existing wall made of lightweight concrete blocks?
Note that on the upper floor there are no concrete walls, only wooden walls, and directly above this wall is a large room, so there are no walls directly above it.

The questions you're asking are a bit difficult to answer.
Answering the first question, which dimension you should have for the glulam beam cannot be determined without knowing what it will support. You mention that there is no wall directly above, which suggests that the wall might potentially support the floor structure, but that may not be the case either.
You also don't specify how long the beam will be, which is crucial for determining its deflection.
Often, a supplier of glulam can help with sizing the beam.
Answering the second question, whether you need posts, depends on the loads on the supports, and cannot be answered without having the answer to question one, but instinctively, it should be possible to use the old wall sections as supports.
I haven't followed your previous posts, but from what you're writing, I gather that you are already doing some renovations in the house and likely have some contacts to consult about where you can turn to get answers to your questions.

A 95 mm wide glulam beam is sufficient and suitable for interior walls, it is the length of the beam that determines the height.
30 - 35 - 40 cm are usually viable, placing 2 glulam posts as supports is just stylish.

Thank you for the answer, Etiol. The wall has now been demolished by craftsmen who fixed it with glue laminates and glue laminate pillars that we then plastered in so they are not visible.
