Renovating my basement in a house built in 1944. Wondering if anyone knows if the pipe insulation in the picture contains asbestos or any other hazardous material? It says Glasollit on it.

  • Pipe insulation labeled "Glasollit" in an old basement, possibly containing hazardous material.

No asbestos in this in the picture.

However, fiberglass that crumbles tremendously in the air. Nasty insulation!

Are you going to replace or work with the pipes
Old house, what you see is probably glass wool, shine a flashlight on it and it might glitter a bit, however in curves and T-joints there may be something else, there is usually a gauze bandage there, squeeze it and listen if it crackles, then it might be asbestos there. Not dangerous as long as it is not disturbed, can preferably be painted over to patent it,

Thanks!
I also got an answer to my question that I've had for a while.
Found a whole box in the attic when I was working on installing the flexible and VP pipes up there.
There were a few scattered here and there too.
It had also been used to insulate the expansion vessel I noticed.
It was a mess with all the dust.
It was very visible when the headlamp shone in the dark.
But the wood shavings weren't bad for dusting either.
I coughed and cleared my throat a lot after each session up there.
