I'm new here and thought I'd ask for your opinions on some thoughts I have. My wife and I are trying to renovate our staircase that goes from the entrance level down to the basement. On the entrance level, we have a section with a trellis that goes from the floor up to the ceiling. We're considering if we might cut it down and make a railing. Then cover it with white horizontal panel instead, and of course make some kind of handrail on it. I'm sure it's not load-bearing because when you move the trellis a bit, it feels quite loose. The only posts that are firmly attached are the ones the handrail down the stairs is screwed into. This is where my concerns come in. Since the handrail in the stairs is supported by the trellis, we need to try to create a stable construction when they no longer go up to the ceiling. Could we maybe instead screw a bunch of angle brackets to the trellis at the floor to secure it properly, or what do you think? Do you have any suggestions? I'll try to upload a picture so you understand a bit better.

I've been thinking about that too. A shame aesthetically to have to keep a pole. But safety-wise, it's probably quite smart. Vetefan if you can get it completely stable by only supporting it from below. Hmm
